Swedish rocker Pugh started out in an R & B band called The Mercy Sect. Later he recorded his debut LP, "Ja, Da, A, Da!" (1969), from which this track is taken. A boisterous mix of demented vocals, piercing lead guitar and heavy drums make this a classic. Purchasers of contemporary hip-hop may recognize certain elements within this piece!
2. TAICONDEROGA - SPEAKIN' MY MIND
Apart from cutting one single for Metronome and appearing on the Beacon records sampler I know little about this band as all routes concerning them seem to lead nowhere. Beacon Records was home to the equally heavy rock act U.F.O.
3. ROLF AND JOACHIM KUHN AND THE MAD ROCKERS - FUNNY BIRD
As solo artists these brothers are prolific, with their roots in free jazz; they created a unique fusion that spawned this ahead of its time track. Utilising electric clarinet and heavy organ in conjunction with innovative arrangements, they shaped what would later be termed Krautrock.
4. MECKI-MARK-MEN - SWEET MOVIN'
An Italian/German 60's beat band, whose song 'Neurotic Reaction' is almost glam rock with its Sweet-esque vocals and heavy, choppy guitar riff. They recorded one LP entitled 'Kannibal Komix' and were later known as Apocalypse.
5. GREAT BEAR - ALMOST GROWN
More mystery! I have tried desperately to find out more about this band but to no avail. I know they only recorded one LP, which included this, their beaty version of Chuck Berry's 'Almost Grown'. Fluid keyboard lines and chunky rhythms dominate this unknown gem.
6. FRIJID PINK - CRYIN' SHAME
This slab of fuzz drenched blues comes courtesy of Detroit. Aside from recording several LPs the first of which charted, they seem to be overlooked compared to other bands from the same area. The track contained here is another B-side and is taken from their first single 'Tell Me Why' on Parrot Records. Check out the call and response between guitar and vocals following the line 'I'm so confused, my mind is distorted'!
7. BLACK CAT BONES - QE2 SONG
Due to immense mystery and rumour concerning this track I am going to leave it that way! If research is your thing, then do it! (Because that's how you get the jewels) However I will add that this is the first time that this track has appeared outside of its original issue, which was a free vinyl given to passengers on an ocean liner cruise! Hence it commanding a £300-up price tag. The track itself is a slice of psychy/beat blues with some amazing guitar work rumoured to be supplied by a famous rock veteran.
8. RITA LEE - VAMOS TRATAR DA SUADE
From lead vocalist of the cult Brazilian Tropicalia movement group 'Os Mutantes' comes this gem taken from her second solo LP and featuring fellow Mutantes members, brothers Sergio and Arnaldo. This is a fine mixture of styles with its echo-plexed vocals, loose bass line and uplifting anthemic chorus "Must be the Sun".
9. KLAUS DOLDINGER - BACK IN THE DARK
Klaus is another veteran of many styles and groups, this is a track he recorded under the name of Paul Nero during a psychedelic pop/soul phase. Deep Purple-esque Hammond, sleazy sax and hard drums dominate this cut to make it a head nod winner. Also worth a check are the recordings by another K. Doldinger group called The Motherhood, again not easy to source.
10. NIAGARA - CITY WALK
Created by Austrian-born drum legend Klaus Weiss in an attempt to create a drum orchestra. City Walk comes from the groups 3rd impossible to find LP 'Afire' on Finger Records. A track such as this is likely to make all fanatical beat junkies break out into a cold sweat over its massive sampling potential. A finely executed rhythmic ambush!
11. ILLES - NEKEM SLY MINDEGY
As you can imagine little has been documented concerning Hungarian rock/fusion and alas there is not much I can tell you about this record, apart from the fact that this was an impulse purchase at a car boot sale. Musically it is spot on for me. The production is very full and tight (listen to the drum and bassline interplay) with razor sharp guitar. Vocals are sung in the group's native tongue, which could prove an obstacle to those with closed minds!
12. SUNBIRDS - SUNRISE
Two LPs only one self-titled comprising of deep/cosmic progressive fusion, the second 'Zagra', a more socks and sandals affair. It is hard to describe how much I love this LP, It has depth and beauty and above all an intensely menacing foundation from which several of the tracks evolve. Niagara frontman Klaus Weiss holds down the rhythmic fortress alongside established guitarist Philip Catherine, creating a hypnotic sonic assault. Yet again original vinyl copies of this are not easily found, so enjoy!
13. THE MOGOL - SUNSET IN GOLDEN HORN
Turkish delights locked in tight on this subtle psych long player. The Mogol play traditional Turkish themes within a modern context, the result is outstanding. 'Sunset In Golden Horn' reminds me slightly of the Electric Flag's score for 'The Trip'. It also has breakdowns on this particular track which recall early David Axelrod productions with strong bass and guitar chords punctuated with drums. This again is a highly sought after item commanding three figures amongst collectors.
14. ET CETERA - LADY BLUE
It seemed like a fitting way to bind this selection together with an offbeat poem from Etc leader Wolfgang Dauner. The very name Wolfgang Dauner is as synonymous with jazz as it is with Krautrock, due to his continual innovation in each area. Et Cetera as a band could swing from crazed electronics to beautiful harmonised melodies, then into hard ragas courtesy of Siggi Schwab of 'Vampyros Lesbos' OST fame. Altogether pretty out there to say the least!
15. BREAKOUT - KARATE
Strike one! Gotcha. It's a joy when LPs of this calibre are rescued from basements of reputable record shops, whose ever-friendly staff like nothing more than to make you believe that their knowledge is above all. So when you pay the pound; smile, and let them continue to believe it. Breakout recorded six LPs that I am aware of and were basically a Polish psychedelic blues band. Karate is from their first LP, these syncopated rhythms will bring joy to anyone using Recycle due to the ill beats contained. Ask first though!
